Personal Style vs. Fashion

What's personal style? Standing out in your own way!

There’s a huge difference between personal style and fashion. Famous designer Yves Saint Laurent said it best, “Fashions fade, style is eternal.”

Don’t get me wrong. I love fashion. I subscribe to the magazines. I’m a Project Runway junkie. Beautiful clothes on beautiful people. It’s ohhhh so glamorous!

Fashion helps us keep an eye on what’s current, youthful and hot. But it’s not very practical or inclusive.

Personal style, on the other hand, is all about you.

“Style is an expression of individualism mixed with charisma. Fashion is something that comes after style.”-John Fairchild

Your look is a celebration of who you are and all you have to offer. It’s building a brand that cannot be denied or duplicated. It’s the sum of everything about you- the accessories you choose, your hairstyle, your favorite perfume, the makeup you do or don’t wear and certainly the way you dress. For some people, a keen sense of fashion is innate. They instinctively know what looks good on them and what doesn’t. Luckily for the rest of us, it can also be developed. Here’s a process to help you get started:

1. Assess your self image

2. Take a cue from your fashion icons

3. Make fashion fit your lifestyle 4. Create a style profile and use it to build your wardrobe
